Cleaning and Restoration vs Decontamination and Abatement and the Human Factor

It’s a Dangerous World Out There! The world of restoration is evolving—pathogens are growing stronger and more resistant, contaminants like fentanyl are becoming more lethal, and forensic restoration sites pose an entirely different level of risk. Whether responding to a water loss, mold remediation, fire and smoke damage, or trauma scene, restoration professionals often face invisible dangers that go beyond structural damage.

So when does cleaning and restoration shift into decontamination and abatement? More importantly, how does any loss—whether biological, chemical, or environmental—affect the human condition? Trauma isn’t just physical; it’s psychological and even spiritual. And the professionals called to restore these spaces often bear the unseen weight of their work.

Renowned Biorisk Management and Infection Control Specialist Dr. Keri Lestage and Microbial Warrior® Jeff Jones will take you beyond traditional restoration practices, uncovering the hidden risks—both visible and invisible—that professionals face on the job. Together, they will help you develop not just a Culture of Safety, but a Culture of Healing, ensuring that those who restore spaces also protect themselves in the process.

Asbestos Testing and Safety Limits for Restoration Companies – What You Should Know

Asbestos is a hazardous material once widely used in construction for its fire-resistant and insulating properties. When disturbed, asbestos fibers can become airborne, posing serious health risks. Due to these risks, asbestos testing and abatement must follow stringent guidelines set by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Restoration companies, in particular, need to adhere to these standards to protect workers, residents, and themselves from legal consequences, including substantial fines. This session will cover important information to help contractors to remain compliant with both federal and state asbestos regulations that are essential for property restoration companies to ensure worker and public safety while avoiding costly fines and legal consequences.

Cleaning for Health in an Age of Mycotoxins, Endotoxins, and Nasty Viruses

Many cleaning professionals still think that sparkle and shine are the ticket to good reviews and additional business. Although the visual aspects of the cleaning profession can never be forgotten, dazzling surfaces that leave behind dangerous, invisible micro-organisms is more common than the cleaning profession would like to admit. Nor is just spraying a harsh chemical at the end or fogging with some well-advertised anti-microbial going to suffice.

Cleaning for the health of the occupants has to be thought of from the start of the cleaning process. The need for professional cleaners who can assist sensitized individuals in ridding their homes and workplaces of residual contaminants is growing every day. The good news is that to successfully transition a part of your cleaning business into this lucrative market is straightforward and a natural next step for many companies. It does not matter whether the problem is related to mold, bacteria or viruses; successful cleaning for health uses a mix of tried-and-true equipment with new products and techniques to both clean and sanitize.

This session will not only provide an overview of the cleaning for health process, it will also offer some marketing advice as well as unbiased recommendations for superior cleaning products and processes.

The importance of documentation is essential when dealing with property claims being billed to insurance companies and there is only SO much an excel sheet or google sheet can do for you before it drives you crazy. We have utilized no-code solutions that automate many processes and allow our team members to focus on their strenghts and on customer service.
