The Cooper Award was established to honor individuals who exemplify excellence in the cleaning and restoration industry and The Experience Events. This award recognizes extraordinary dedication and leadership. It was named after The Experience Events' founders, Tryna and Larry Cooper.

The award considers three key qualifications:

  • More than 20 years of service in the industry
  • A notable history of charitable work or industry mentoring
  • Attendance, exhibition, or presentation for at least 10 Experience Events

This year’s recipient, Les Cunningham, exemplifies dedication, innovation, and an unwavering commitment to excellence. His career is marked by his relentless pursuit and visionary leadership. His career began as a schoolteacher and United States Air Force pilot. In 1971, he decided to step into the business world and founded his own remodeling company. Under his leadership, the company flourished, growing into one of the largest in its area in less than five years.

Cunningham’s influence has a reach far beyond his business success. After establishing his company, he founded a local NARI chapter, serving as its first president. His leadership quickly gained national recognition, and he played a key role in developing the Certified Restorer (CR) program and the Convention Seminar Programs. He has contributed to numerous industry innovations and launched his own coaching business, supporting countless professionals and businesses in their growth. His involvement with The Experience is significant, and he also leads the annual Gathering of the Eagles event in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.

Cunningham’s passion for excellence, commitment to helping others succeed, and innovative approach have left a lasting imprint on the cleaning and restoration industry. He has not only transformed businesses but inspired and mentored numerous professionals throughout his career. A leader, visionary, and proud family man, Cunningham’s legacy continues to inspire.

During the award presentation, Cunningham, alongside his son, Chip Cunningham, were moved to tears as his son read “The Race” by D.H. Groberg, a poem that deeply resonates with Cunningham’s journey. A few lines from the poem capture his spirit:

“For all of life is like that race,
With ups and downs and all.
And all you have to do to win,
Is rise each time you fall.”

Cunningham’s tireless dedication, drive, and resilience have made him an industry pillar. His contributions have shaped the careers and lives of many and strengthened the industry. Congratulations, Les, and thank you for your enduring impact on the industry!
