Motivation quite simply is the reason we do things. We do things to gain pleasure or avoid pain; it's just that simple. In this daily changing landscape in the restoration and cleaning space, we use the word motivation often questioning why people do what they do or why they don’t. Motivation is the driving force behind human actions. It determines how we set and achieve goals, how persistently we work towards them and how we overcome obstacles.
I have been in this motivation space for many years, becoming a Motivation Factor PractitionerTM to assist in serving others in their pursuit of excellence. One big myth I need to dispel is that staying motivated is easy. It’s not! People often struggle with motivation, whether in their personal lives, professional endeavors or health-related goals. Understanding what motivates individuals, why they sometimes lack motivation and how to boost it can be transformative no matter what industry you are in.
What Motivates People?
Motivation can be classified into two main types: intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. Both play a crucial role in shaping human behavior.
1. Intrinsic Motivation
Intrinsic motivation comes from within an individual. It is driven by personal satisfaction, interest, how we use our talents and even the joy of performing a task. People that are intrinsically motivated engage in activities for their inherent pleasure rather than for a tangible reward. Examples include:
- Pursuing a hobby like painting, music or writing purely for enjoyment
- Learning a new skill out of curiosity and passion
- Exercising because it makes one feel good rather than for external validation
Intrinsic motivation tends to be more sustainable because it stems from personal desires rather than external pressures.
2. Extrinsic Motivation
Extrinsic motivation, on the other hand, arises from external rewards or pressures. This type of motivation is driven by factors such as money, grades, recognition or avoiding punishment. Examples include:
- Working hard to earn a promotion or a bonus at work
- Studying to achieve high grades or academic recognition
- Engaging in a fitness program to meet societal standards rather than personal satisfaction
While extrinsic motivation can be effective in the short term, it may not be as sustainable as intrinsic motivation. People motivated solely by external factors may lose enthusiasm once the rewards disappear.
Why Do People Lack Motivation?
Despite having goals, many individuals struggle with motivation. Some will state that is about laziness; and that may not be the case. With the right leverage, our motivation changes. Several psychological and environmental factors contribute to this lack of drive. So, what are some reasons?
1. Fear of Failure
One of the biggest reasons people lose motivation is the fear of failure. The thought of not succeeding can be paralyzing, leading to procrastination or avoidance of tasks altogether.
2. Lack of Clearly Defined Goals
Unclear or unrealistic goals can lead to frustration. If a person does not have specific, achievable objectives, they may feel overwhelmed and unmotivated.
3. Absence of Immediate Rewards
Many significant goals, such as losing weight, building a career or mastering a skill, require long-term effort with no immediate rewards. This can lead to a loss of motivation when progress seems slow.
4. Burnout and Fatigue
Overworking oneself without adequate rest can result in burnout, making even the simplest tasks feel overwhelming.
5. Lack of Support and Encouragement
Humans are social beings, and a lack of encouragement from peers, family or mentors can diminish motivation.
6. Negative Self-Talk
A negative inner dialogue can be a significant motivation killer. Constantly doubting one’s abilities or fearing criticism can prevent progress.
Motivation Capability is directly related to the things that drain you, based on what people are doing or not doing.
Overcoming motivational challenges requires a strategic approach. Some effective techniques to boost motivation include:
- Set Clear Goals. Use the SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) framework.
- Be Positive. If not, you may be the drainer! Determine WHY you are doing it; this will fuel your decisions.
- Get Support. When you share your goals and dreams others will want to be part of it and will help you on your way.
- Develop a Routine. Establishing a daily routine and sticking to it can create momentum, making tasks feel less challenging over time.
- And lastly, spend time with people who motivate and inspire you. Surrounding yourself with likeminded people with energy and passion will help!
Motivation is a complex and dynamic force that influences our behaviors and achievements. While external rewards can offer short-term incentives, intrinsic motivation is key to long-lasting success. When we understand what drives or hinders our motivation, we can implement strategies to maintain and enhance our drive. Taking care of one’s well-being can help sustain motivation and lead to a fulfilling life.
If you are the employer, motivating your staff is certainly a challenge. Your job is to support their engagement and growth, helping them develop as a functioning member of the team.
Company owners and managers play a crucial role in fostering motivation among employees. A few things to consider supporting your team include knowing what they need and what they are great at doing. Performance barriers will get in the way of production and how motivated they are at completed tasks if they don’t have what they need to be successful. If we focus on our talents and strengths, we can create a culture of performance that supports the company and the team.
- Recognize and Reward Achievements
- Provide Growth Opportunities
- Foster a Positive Work Environment
- Encourage Work-Life Balance
- Set Clear Goals and Expectations – be specific!
- Offer Autonomy and Responsibility
- Communicate and Provide Feedback
- Lead by Example
When we surround ourselves with people who demonstrate passion, dedication and a strong work ethic, it inspires others to do the same.
