Testing for EPA registration of disinfectants and antimicrobials is conducted following a strict protocol. But such testing does not mimic the way that such chemicals are used for the remediation of water losses, mold, etc. A study was conducted with two Benefect products to determine if antimicrobials produced with natural essential oils was effective in conditions that replicate a Category 3 (black water) loss in a residential basement. The results showed a near complete removal of pathogenic organisms from concrete walls and floors, wood studs, and OSB sheathing that were saturated with raw sewage. Following label directions for the use of Atomic Degreaser and Decon 30 allows restoration contractors to meet stringent post-remediation criteria without additional cleaning/sanitizing steps.
