Hi Annissa,
I agree that getting a physical newsletter in the mail is a good way to go. But it's not the only way. By asserting that email newsletters give the impression that "you haven't done a ton of effort" to send it out is false. It takes just as much effort to put together a well designed and well written e-newsletter than it does a physical one. The major difference is the cost involved and the audience you're able to reach.
Sending out a newsletter monthly is vital. It keeps your business's name front and center with existing and future customers. Send them something worth reading and they'll also see your name regularly. Then when a disaster strikes, your company will be fresh on their mind. But when your coverage area may include an entire county or two, you're now talking about thousands of dollars for each and every issue that's mailed to reach the number of people you'd like. If a company can afford that, fine. But many can't. Email newsletters are the most cost effective way to reach your customers.
Email newsletters can also contain videos and links to other sites for more information. Also, a newsletter sent in the mail may only be seen by a few, or discarded with junk mail. But an email newsletter goes where the people are - on their smart phones, tablets and computers.
As you mentioned, companies shouldn't fill their newsletters with ads. To me, the three most important aspects of a good newsletter are content, content and content - no matter how you send it. And keep it relatively short as attention spans these days can be incredibly brief.
